Preventive dentistry in Courtenay, BC
Prevention is the most cost-effective thing you can do for your teeth. Regular cleanings remove the plaque and calculus buildup that causes gum disease and decay, and give us the chance to catch small problems before they become large ones. We see patients of every age, from a child's first tooth to a senior's lifelong maintenance.
Our hygienists are known for their gentle approach. We explain what we're doing, answer your questions without judgment, and aim to make every visit something you leave feeling good about, not just relieved it is over.
Hygiene visit & dental exam
Your hygiene visit is the foundation of your dental health. Our hygienists carefully remove plaque and calculus buildup from all surfaces, polish your teeth, and apply fluoride if desired. The dentist then examines your teeth, gums, bite, and existing restorations, and reviews your X-rays. If anything needs attention, we discuss it clearly before recommending any treatment.
- Professional cleaning: plaque and calculus removal
- Comprehensive dental exam
- Digital X-rays (as needed, reduced radiation)
- Personalized oral hygiene advice
- Gum health assessment
Oral cancer screening (VELscope)
Every comprehensive new patient exam at Crown Isle Dental includes a VELscope oral cancer screening. VELscope uses a safe blue-light device to illuminate tissue in a way that helps detect abnormalities that are not visible to the naked eye. The exam takes under 5 minutes, is entirely non-invasive, and requires no special preparation. Early detection of oral cancer dramatically improves outcomes.
Dental sealants
The pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth trap food and bacteria, making them prone to decay even with careful brushing. Dental sealants are a thin protective coating painted onto those surfaces to seal out debris. The application is completely painless, requires no anesthetic, and takes only a few minutes per tooth. We recommend sealants especially for children and teens, though adults can benefit too.
- Painless, no anesthetic required
- Recommended for children, teens, and cavity-prone adults
- Significantly reduces the risk of decay on back teeth
- More cost-effective than treating a cavity later
Occlusal (night) guards
Teeth grinding and clenching, often called bruxism, wears down tooth structure, fractures restorations, and strains the jaw joints and muscles. Many people grind without knowing it. A custom-fitted occlusal guard worn at night cushions the bite, protects your teeth and existing dental work, and reduces muscle tension. Over-the-counter guards are available but rarely fit well enough to be comfortable over the long term.
- Custom-fitted for comfort and effectiveness
- Protects teeth from grinding wear and fracture
- Reduces morning jaw soreness and headaches
- Extends the life of crowns, fillings, and veneers
Children's first visits
We welcome children from their first birthday, or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits are short, gentle, and focused on making dental care feel normal rather than scary. We show children the tools before using them, explain everything in age-appropriate language, and give parents practical guidance for brushing and diet at each stage of development. The goal is a child who grows up comfortable with dental care.
- First visit recommended by age 1
- Gentle, child-friendly approach throughout
- Parent coaching on brushing, diet, and habits
- Sealants and fluoride as appropriate by age
Digital X-rays
Our digital X-ray sensors use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays and produce instant, high-resolution images we can show you on screen during your appointment. X-rays let us see what is happening between teeth, below the gumline, and at the roots, where problems are invisible to the naked eye. We take X-rays only as often as clinically indicated, not on a fixed schedule regardless of individual need.
- Up to 90% less radiation than traditional X-rays
- Instant images, reviewed with you on screen
- Taken only when clinically warranted
Preventive dentistry FAQs
How often should I get a dental cleaning?
Most patients benefit from a professional cleaning every 6 months. Patients with active gum disease or a history of periodontal issues may need to come in every 3 months. We will recommend the right frequency based on your individual situation, not a one-size-fits-all schedule.
What is VELscope and do I need it?
VELscope is a non-invasive blue-light device that helps detect tissue abnormalities not visible to the naked eye. It is included in every comprehensive new patient exam at Crown Isle Dental. Early detection of oral cancer significantly improves survival rates, making this a worthwhile few minutes.
Are dental sealants painful?
No. Applying dental sealants is entirely painless and requires no anesthetic. The sealant material is painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and hardened with a curing light. The whole process takes just a few minutes per tooth.
When should my child have their first dental visit?
We recommend your child's first visit by their first birthday, or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits help children build a positive relationship with dental care and allow us to catch any issues at the earliest possible stage.
Do I need a night guard if I grind my teeth?
If you show signs of grinding or clenching, a custom-fitted occlusal guard is one of the most effective ways to protect your teeth from wear, reduce jaw muscle fatigue, and prevent damage to existing restorations. We assess for grinding signs at every hygiene visit.
Does Crown Isle Dental accept insurance for preventive care?
Yes. We work with most major dental insurance plans and follow the BC Dental Association fee guide. Preventive care is typically well covered. We will provide a clear breakdown of costs before any treatment.
How often do you actually need a dental cleaning?
Every six months is the standard, but the right frequency depends on your individual risk profile.
