Say Goodbye to Tooth Sensitivity

Girl with tooth sensitivity

Nothing spoils the comfort of a cozy cup of hot cocoa like a sudden jolt of pain from sensitive teeth. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—up to 30% of Canadians experience tooth sensitivity at some point in their lives. This issue affects people of all ages, including children! But what exactly causes tooth sensitivity, and how can you protect your teeth from it?

Understanding Tooth Sensitivity

Our teeth are more complex than they seem. The outer layer, called enamel, protects the inner parts of the tooth. Beneath this is the porous, bony middle layer known as dentin, and finally, the pulp at the core, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If enamel wears down or gums recede, dentin becomes exposed, and tiny tubules within the dentin allow sensations like temperature and pressure to reach the nerves. This overstimulation of the nerves leads to the sharp, uncomfortable sensations of tooth sensitivity.

Common Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Several factors can lead to tooth sensitivity, including:

  1. Enamel Erosion: Acidic foods and drinks, improper brushing, or teeth grinding can wear away enamel, leaving the sensitive dentin exposed.

  2. Gum Recession: Receding gums due to gum disease, teeth grinding, or aggressive brushing can expose the roots of your teeth, which lack the protection of enamel.

  3. Cavities or Tooth Injuries: Damage to the tooth structure can cause heightened sensitivity.

What Can You Do to Protect Your Teeth?

Thankfully, there are ways to manage tooth sensitivity:

  • Switch to a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush: This reduces further damage to your enamel and gums.

  • Use Special Toothpaste: Formulated for sensitive teeth, these toothpastes help block the pain pathways.

  • Limit Acidic and Sugary Foods: Cutting back on highly acidic or sugary foods and beverages like soda can help prevent enamel erosion.

Most importantly, don’t suffer in silence! At Crown Isle Dental, we offer effective solutions such as:

  • Applying fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel

  • Recommending desensitizing toothpaste

  • For more severe cases, performing dental restorations or suggesting gum grafting to protect exposed roots
