What Is Pearl AI?

Think of it as a highly trained second set of eyes. When Dr. Sharma and our clinical team review your digital X-rays, the Pearl AI software simultaneously analyzes the images. It uses artificial intelligence to highlight potential areas of concern at the pixel level, often before they become visible to the naked eye.

It is worth explaining why that matters, because reading a dental X-ray is harder than most patients realise. A bitewing radiograph is a small, flat, greyscale image of a three-dimensional structure. Early decay between two teeth, in the contact point where a toothbrush cannot reach and the eye cannot see, often shows up as a faint change in density perhaps a millimetre across. Early bone loss around a root can be similarly subtle. Dentists are trained extensively to read these images and read thousands of them, but software has one advantage no clinician can match: it looks at the whole image with exactly the same attention every time, on the first X-ray of the morning and the last of the day.

Of those three, early detection is the one with the clearest effect on what you actually experience as a patient. Dentistry is unusual in how sharply the cost and invasiveness of treatment escalate with delay. Decay caught early, while it is confined to enamel or has just reached the dentin, is usually a straightforward filling: one visit, local anesthetic, done. Left to progress, that same decay reaches the pulp, and now you are looking at root canal treatment and a crown, which means more appointments and considerably more cost. Left longer still, the tooth may not be savable at all.

The same logic applies to bone level changes around the roots. Early periodontal changes often respond well to hygiene therapy and improved home care. Advanced bone loss does not grow back. None of this is new, and it is the entire argument for regular checkups. What Pearl adds is a small improvement in the odds of catching something at stage one rather than stage two, applied to every X-ray, every patient, every visit.

Your Care, Upgraded

While this technology represents a significant step forward for our practice, it is important to note that it acts strictly as a diagnostic aid. The software does not replace human expertise. Dr. Sharma's clinical judgment and personalized approach to your care remain the foundation of everything we do.

In practice, that means Dr. Sharma reviews every X-ray herself and weighs what the software highlighted against your symptoms, your clinical examination, and your dental history. A shadow on an X-ray means something quite different in a tooth that has been aching for a fortnight than in one you have never noticed. Software has no access to that context. Your dentist does. AI tools can also flag things that turn out to be nothing, and they can miss things a trained clinician catches, which is precisely why a dentist reads every image regardless of what the software says.

A few practical notes patients often ask about: this does not mean more X-rays. We follow the same guidelines on radiographic frequency we always have, and Pearl reviews the images we would have taken anyway. There is no additional radiation, no extra time in the chair, and no separate charge to you or your insurance.

Your dental records, including X-ray images, are handled in accordance with British Columbia privacy legislation and the standards of the BC College of Oral Health Professionals.
